Faux Leather Badge Construction
Leather badges on EmbroideryBadge.uk are produced using high-quality faux leather. We create the antique, premium finish by laser etching (engraving) your artwork directly into the surface. As a result, the engraved areas appear as a darker tonal shade of the same leather colour, creating natural contrast without the use of ink or thread colour changes.
Because each badge is cut from a sheet material, it can be cut into almost any shape. However, extremely sharp internal corners may require a small radius to ensure clean cutting and long-term durability. We flag this during the mock-up stage so there are no surprises during production.
Application Rules & Limitations
Faux leather is not heat-seal suitable in most cases. Many heat press setups apply heat from the bottom plate, which can soften, warp, or permanently mark the leather surface. Therefore, the most reliable and professional application method is stitching.
- Manual stitch-on: Ideal for premium garments and small production runs.
- Machine appliqué stitch-on: Best for consistent placement and efficiency on embroidery machines.
If you plan to attach the badges using an embroidery machine, we can provide a free outline appliqué DST file to ensure accurate placement and clean stitching during production.
What We Review Before Approval
Before you approve your order, we carry out a technical artwork review to confirm engraving suitability. Specifically, we assess line thickness, spacing, and tonal contrast to ensure fine details do not fill in during the etching process. We also confirm shape, size, and placement so the final badge remains clear, legible, and visually balanced once applied.
In Simple Terms
Definition:
Leather badges are made from high-quality faux leather, with your design engraved or embossed directly into the surface. This creates a premium, vintage-style finish using tone and depth rather than colour or stitching.
Best for:
Leather badges work best for fashion brands, lifestyle products, denim, jackets, bags, and accessories where a subtle, understated, and high-end look is more important than colour detail.
Not ideal for:
They are not suitable for colourful logos, very fine text, or designs that rely on multiple colours or sharp contrast. For detailed or colour-critical artwork, embroidered, woven, or printed badges are usually a better technical choice.
Pricing and Lead Times

FAQs — Faux Leather (Vegan Leather) Badges
Ordering & Brand Reassurance
What is the minimum order quantity?
The minimum order for Faux Leather badges is 100 pieces per design. Because these require precision embossing setups and tooling, the 100-piece minimum cannot be split across multiple logos, colourways, sizes, or design variations.
Can I see a sample before full production?
Yes. We use a strict Two-Step Approval Process.
Step 1: A high-resolution digital mock-up to confirm layout, placement, and sizing.
Step 2: A high-resolution photograph of the actual embossed production sample. Mass production only begins once you approve the real-world sample.
What is your cancellation policy?
Digital stage: Free cancellation.
Production sample stage: If you cancel after the physical sample is created, a non-refundable setup fee of £42 applies.
Post-approval: Once the final production sample is approved and payment is made, cancellation is no longer possible as materials and tooling are locked into production.
How quickly will I receive my leather badges?
Standard production for Faux Leather badges is typically 10–12 working days after final approval. Repeat orders are often faster and usually ship within 7–9 working days.
Expert Production Insights (The Gold Dust)
What are the size limits for Faux Leather?
We can produce Faux Leather badges from 30mm up to 100mm, depending on shape and layout.
Critical rule for leather: To remain legible when embossed, lettering must be at least 4.5mm–5mm high. Anything smaller may fill in during embossing and become unreadable. We check this during the mock-up stage.
How do the colours work with embossing?
We offer a range of specialised leather shades (see our Leather Fabric Shade Card).
Technical logic: Embossing uses heat and pressure, which naturally creates a darker tonal shade of the chosen leather colour within the recessed areas. This creates a premium contrast without ink.
Can you match my existing brand colours or badge?
Yes. Provide Pantone references or a high-resolution photo of your existing badge taken from a flat, aerial angle.
For the highest accuracy, you can also post a physical sample to our Brentwood UK office. We will match the leather shade and embossing tone as closely as technically possible.
Why Faux (Vegan) Leather instead of animal hide?
Faux Leather is engineered for consistency and durability. Unlike natural hide, which varies in thickness and grain, Faux Leather provides a uniform surface that embosses cleanly and predictably.
It is also OEKO-TEX® compliant, weather-resistant, and less prone to cracking or stiffening over time, which makes it a reliable option for long-term garment branding.
How strong is the backing on leather badges?
Leather is a dense material. For the most permanent bond—especially on jackets, bags, or heavy garments—we recommend stitching.
However, our industrial-grade heat-seal (iron-on) and adhesive backings are effective on flat, non-porous fabrics for many applications.
How do I care for Faux Leather badges?
To maintain the embossed detail and shape:
- Cold wash only
- Wash inside out
- No tumble drying (high heat can affect the leather shape and adhesive bond)

How Faux Leather Compares to Real Leather
Customers often ask how faux leather compares to real leather. We respect both materials, however they serve very different purposes depending on how the product will be used.
The Heritage of Real Leather
Real leather has a long tradition. It carries a natural scent, a unique grain, and a patina that develops over time. For handcrafted, one-off items such as belts or bespoke bags, this variation is part of the appeal.
However, at EmbroideryBadge.uk we specialise in branded garment sets, uniforms, and repeat production. In these cases, a different set of technical requirements becomes more important than organic variation.
Why We Use High-Quality Faux (Vegan) Leather
We use specialised Faux Leather not as a cheaper substitute, but as the correct technical solution for precision branding.
Predictable precision: Natural leather varies in density across a single hide. As a result, embossing depth can change from one area to another. Faux leather provides a uniform surface, so every logo and every line of text (minimum 4.5mm) embosses consistently across a full production run.
Garment performance: Real leather can stiffen, crack, or bleed colour when exposed to washing and heat. Our Faux Leather is engineered to remain flexible, colour-stable, and durable, even when used on garments that are washed regularly.
The tonal finish: Our embossing process uses heat and pressure to create a darker tonal shade in the recessed areas. This produces a refined, luxury leather look with reliable contrast. With real leather, the natural oils in the hide can make this effect unpredictable.
Consistency vs Character
Choose real leather for handcrafted or bespoke items where variation and rugged individuality are part of the design.
Choose our Faux Leather for corporate branding, uniform sets, retail merchandise, and repeat orders where consistency, durability, and visual reliability matter most.
The Expert Rule: Branding Requires Reliability
We value the tradition of leather. However, we prioritise the long-term success of your brand.
By choosing our engineered Faux Leather, you are not compromising on appearance. Instead, you gain the predictability, durability, and repeatability required for professional garment branding — while still achieving a premium leather aesthetic and tactile depth.
